I did something really silly the other day, I had bought some very cheap yarn in a local cheapo store,I liked the colours, so decided I would lay it out on soluble fabric, stitch across in rows about 4" apart, first mistake, the yarn kept moving between the soluble, second mistake, I used a zig-zag stitch 'DUH' as soon as I washed it, apart from the fact that I think the soluble film had gone off or something, as it went into gloopy stringy bits that would not melt, took loads of rinses, but, the zig-zag of course opened out as it was not anchored to anything. Thanks Heather, I am going to try another one, but I may just push the thread through as I go, I got into such a mess, I shall do the backstitch hopefully it will work, the yarn was only 49p a ball, so nothing lost,
